Description
The church of Santa Maria Argentea was built between 1560 and 1574 to replace an early Middle Age parish church, demolished to make room for the fortress of Castellina.
According to tradition, the ancient building had been erected on a preceding pagan temple consecrated in the 3rd century by Saint Feliciano, Bishop of Foligno, with the name of Basilica Argentea.
The current construction is the result of various reconstructions following the damage caused by numerous earthquakes. The simple façade, with gable roof, is decorated by an elegant portal surmounted by a tympanum and provided with doors dated 1576. The sturdy square bell tower dates to 1869. The single-apse basilica layout is divided into three naves. Of an 18th century appearance, it preserves altars decorated by interesting canvases.. To the left of the presbytery, the chapel of the Madonna of Mercy, by Francesco Duquesnoy around 1640. The altar was commissioned by Giacinto Senzasono. At the centre is a miraculous fresco depicting Our Lady with Child, Saint Benedict and Saint Scolastica produced by the workshop of the Sparapane (1528).
